Refraction is the phenomenon of light being deflected in passing through the interface between one medium and another. Of course this definition refers to the mediums of air & water, but my interest is the interface between the mediums of painting and textiles.
In an attempt to capture this phenomena, I'm painting, drawing, and scribbling on multiple fabric layers. Sheer organza overlays with the same painted patterns are manipulated to float in organic waves, creating a juxtaposition of lines. This challenges the viewer's perception as to what lines are on which surface. As the lines intermingle, a three-dimensional effect occurs. Some of the lines appear to float off the surface.
